ASSIGNMENTS

The policy at Westridge is to not assign homework to Kindergarten students.  I have provided you some projects that your child can do at home to help reinforce what we are learning in the classroom.  If your child does any of this work and brings it in to school, we will post it in the ESL classroom for everyone to enjoy.

Objects in my home.

Please click here to access the cards that have picutres and their names of objects around the house.  Please cut each one out and tape them on these objects so you and your child can learn the names in English.

Shopping for Letters.

Clicking here will take you to a wonderful website called Readingrockets.  You can download fun worksheets to practice letters after grocery shopping.  This site is also in Spanish and is fun for the whole family.  Enjoy while your child learns!

The numbers 1 - 20.

Picture
We will be working on counting from 1 - 20 during the first half of the school year.  Please help your child cut out one or two numbers a week.  We will also do this at school but doing this at home will also help your child develop fine motor skills by working with his or her hands.

The Life Cycle.
In the Spring we will be learning about the life cycle and we will have the caterpillar house so we can watch them change into butterflies.  Please watch The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle with your child so he or she can become familiar with this concept.

Sight Word Lists.

Picture
Sight words are usually the first words that children learn just by looking at them many times.  I have provided you two different sets of sight words that you can download and review with your children.  You may want to cut them out and make flash cards that your child can review in the car or at the table or on a rainy Saturday.  I will add a new list once a month as we begin to learn new words.

Reading Logs.

Picture
On Mondays I will send home a book with your child that we have read together.  Please encourage him or her to spend at least 10 minutes each night reading this book or maybe you have a book at home in your native language that you would like to read together.  It is my hope for your child to develop a love for reading and it does not matter who is doing the reading.  Please fill out the Reading Log I have provided so we can celebrate your child's achievement in class!

All About Me.

Picture
Fifth-grade students will be coming into the classroom to help your child make a poster that tells you child's favorite color, book, candy plus their name and grade.  This is an assignment for citizenship and helping others for which the older students will receive a grade.  I have posted the requirements the students will be graded on for you to look at.  The children enjoy this project and teaches them about helping others.

My Journal

Picture
Please keep a plain notebook or sketchbook for your child to draw or write about his or her day at school whenever they want.  They can bring it in once a week if they like and we will review it together and put stickers on the pages as a reward.  This is a good way to find out what your child did at school and practice his or her handwriting.
